Gackt Camui (神威 楽斗, Kamui Gakuto?, born July 4, 1973), known solely as GACKT, is a Japanese musician, singer-songwriter, actor, and author. He has been active since 1995, first as a vocalist for the defunct visual kei rock band Malice Mizer, and from 1999 as a solo artist. He has released nine studio albums, and with forty-one singles released holds the male soloist record for most top ten singles in Japan music history. His single "Returner (Yami no Shūen)", released on June 20, 2007, was his first and only single to reach the number one spot on the Oricon charts. He became the first Japanese artist to release his music catalog on iTunes in October 2007.
Besides that, in modern entertainment industry his music has been used as theme songs for various video games, anime films and television series. In addition to his music, Gackt acted in few films, including the film he wrote, Moon Child, and his international debut Bunraku, and series such as the NHK drama Fūrin Kazan. He also performed live in a theatre stage run.
Early years (1973–93)
Gackt (whose real name is unknown, though is rumored to be Okabe Satoru, 岡部学) was born on July 4, 1973, as the second of three children in a Ryukyuan family, in Okinawa, Kyūshū region in Japan. His father was a music teacher primarily playing the trumpet and his mother was also a teacher. Gackt has an older sister, and a younger brother. Because of father's job he lived in many different cities, in addition to Okinawa in Yamaguchi, Fukuoka, Shiga, Osaka, and Kyoto. Gackt's musical education began at age three, when his parents initiated his classical piano education. He grew tired of at age seven when entered elementary school, and because of moving had to change teachers. It would take another four years until his parents allowed him to quit. Since his father played the trumpet, he was also familiar with brass instruments. He has credited the classical pianist and composer Frédéric Chopin with being "the one who taught me the beauty, depth, fun, sadness, kindness of music; that music could grant people courage, and the meaning of the layers of sound. It isn't an exaggeration to say Chopin is the foundation of my music."
According to Gackt's autobiography Jihaku, he was a mischievous child and had a tendency to face death; at age seven he nearly drowned while swimming off the coast of Okinawa. After this near-death experience, he claims to have paranormal abilitiy to see and speak with deceased people, as well family members. At the age of ten, he was hospitalized with a gastrointestinal condition and had to remain at the hospital for a prolonged time. He made the acquaintance of several terminally ill children, some of whom died during his stay.
Having only listened to classical music and enka while growing up, he did not become interested in rock music until he was a young adult. He cites Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" as being particularly inspiring, and went on to master modern percussion and electric guitar.
Malice Mizer (1995–98)
In the early 90’s, he stopped playing drums, studio band activities went blank for awhile, and found himself working multiple jobs at once, among them as a sound technician at the studio. When was in his early 20’s, in a music livehouse event he met a guitarist You Kurosaki, his solo career support guitarist, and they formed a band Cains’:Feel (with biblical reference to the story of Cain and Abel). Because of the mediocre acquaintances at the moment, Gackt unexpectedly became the frontman, and they recorded a demo tape.
In the upcoming year he was introduced to Mana, leader of visual kei band Malice Mizer which was on hiatus because were without vocalist. Gackt moved to Tokyo, and joined them in October 1995. He was the singer-lyricist, pianist, and contributed only two, but bands cult songs, “Regret” and “Le Ciel”. With him bands fame soared, and at their peak, after four years and two studio albums, in January of 1999 was announced that he left the band. According to his autobiography, the members differences, obsession, sudden income of money, and his isolation from the band, have led to his departure.
Solo Career (1999–present)

Gackt launched his solo career on January 1, 1999. After having completed his recordings, his first gig as a solo artist was the 99 Gackt Resurrection tour held in 12 locations across Japan.
